Theorizing about the borderlands: Deconstructing the Mexican War on Drugs

I do not want to remember this open wound. It is so hard to talk and write about your own story when it hurts so much to remember. Remembering not only my own experience but also the collective experiences of the people who have gone through similar or even worse and unimaginable pain. The people living in the physical borderland understand and know this pain because they live it on the everyday basis, but my blood burns with rage knowing that no current discourse makes justice to this pain and struggle. I was lucky enough that a part of me left the physical war zone in the mid-2006 just at the moment when Calderon declared the war on drugs. But still how can a community mourn the dead of someone whose body was burn in acid by drug lords? How do you help the mother to cope with this pain? How can it get better when the people witness military, government, police and the organize crime fighting for territory right in front of a kinder garden? Some have chosen to ignore this part of history. But, how can you ignore it when people’s memories still carry this pain?

A couple months ago I got the chance to watch Pariah, a unique film on Black Queerness. This is a poem shared during the film by the Pariah, the film’s protagonist. BEAUTIFUL POETRY <3

"Heartbreak opens onto the sunrise.

For even breaking is opening and I am broken.

I am open.

See the love shine in through my cracks.

See the light shine out through me.

My spirit takes journey.

My spirit takes flight, and I am not running, I am choosing.

I am broken.

I am broken open.

Breaking is freeing.

Broken is freedom.

I am not broken.

I am free.”

-Pariah (2011)
